Kingfisher Business Class - Audio Recording Reveals Children Directing Air Traffic at JFK
Audio recordings posted to several air-traffic controller websites reveal that at least one child was in the tower and was communicating directly with pilots as they flew in and out of JFK. Kennedy International Airport sometime in December or January. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association are investigating an incident that occurred in the air traffic control tower at New York's John F.
The adult on the recording eventually explains jokingly to the pilots that this is what happens when the kids are out of school. The response of the pilots' indicates that they were aware that they were speaking to a child and that he was being instructed by an air traffic controller. An adult can be heard instructing the child as he speaks to pilots, on the recording.
" "This behavior is not acceptable and does not demonstrate the kind of professionalism expected from all FAA employees. " the FAA said in a statement, the employees involved in this incident are not controlling air traffic, "Pending the outcome of our investigation. Doesn't find any humor at all in the incident and they have launched a full investigation, of course, the FAA.
That didn't happen in this instance, apparently. Including gaining prior approval from the FAA, the FAA does allow children to be in the air traffic control tower under certain conditions, technically. Sounds like someone's got some explaining to do.
